See here if that fits what you want to accomplish. I find it pretty easy to search for a character name's previous reference in a book, for example, then go back to where I was.

This feature is only available when reading ebooks, not in pdfs.
Edit: I take it back, I checked to be sure, been a while since I read a pdf: this feature is available also in pdfs.
