According to several dictionaries, humankind is correct and refers to humanity or the human race and is a synonym for mankind though that synonym has disappeared from recent editions.

To quote from a GC publication:

Quote:
mankind, humankind, human race

Choose gender-inclusive nouns such as people, the human race, humankind or humanity rather than mankind.

In the history of humankind (or humanity or the human race), there have been few despots who were loved by their people.

Would Neil Armstrong have said, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” in these gender-sensitive times?
