Sorry, but, as I said above, it just doesn't work that way. Kobo only syncs what is in their environment. Just like Kindle, tolino and most others. Sideloading books onto the devices doesn't add the books to the environment and they don't get synced automatically. Kindle and tolino have ways to do this, but you need to do something other than just add the book to the device. And, Kobo has no support for syncing books not purchased from their shop.

And yes, if you are not purchasing books from Kobo, their app is pretty pointless. But, so are most apps tied to some sort of store. If you want to read on a phone or tablet, there are a myriad of apps out there for that. Some of them are probably good. I don't use them, so I cannot comment.
