God, I know that feeling! It's irritating to hae hundreds of "channels" or whatever we're calling them these days, paying some, if not a lot, of money for choice and 95% of what's out there isn't fresh content but, let's face it,
reruns for which we are now privileged to pay. I mean, man, talk about being sold a bill of goods.
Yeah, sure, someone will say "yes, but now
it's on-demand! You can watch them (mostly) when you want." Sure, but they're also nearly pure manna to the networks/stations, whatever, tons of stuff is royalty-free or rights-free to them--actors didn't have residuals at that time or what-have-you. I'm pretty sure that the estate of Raymond Burr isn't getting a penny when I watch Perry Mason reruns from the 50's!
I don't know how they work the concept of "one person in Lower Slobbovia streams it, so Netflix has to pay you $0.0001 for that single stream," or whatever, but
by and large, selling us reruns is nearly pure profit to them. Set up a server, make sure you have the bandwidth to deliver (which for NFLX is largely free, thanks to US laws), and
voilà.
