Kindle 8th Generation Wifi stopped working after upgrade

I bought a used 8th generation Kindle, successfully registered it, and set it up. All was good. Then I got an update to 5.13.7 (I think, this was a while back). After the update, Kindle would no longer connect to wifi. It just comes back with "Wi-Fi Error" after 10's of seconds. I tried different networks, different routers, wide open network without password; never connects. I tried reset to factory; still won't connect.

I contacted Amazon and told them wifi stopped working after the update and they suggested I return to who I bought it from or trade it in for a new one. Not very helpful.

Each time a new updates comes out, I download it and send it to the Kindle via usb hoping it resolves the problem, but no luck. I'm now up to 5.14.2. I recently noticed the jailbreak instructions here and successfully completed it. I installed Kual and kterm, so I can now poke around in a console.

Does anyone have any idea what I should look for to resolve this? The screen where you select the wifi network lists the networks and shows signal strength, so it doesn't seem like a hardware problem. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
