I had one of my regular eye injections for Diabetic Macular Edema last Thursday (just right eye this month). Friday all day I was feeling an itch in the eye, which I assumed was irritation from the injection. Had a hard time sleeping Friday night with a very teary eye.
Saturday morning wiped the eye down with a hot cloth and shut the left eye to see how the right eye was. NOTHING; just a white cloud.
Went to the local Emergency where the Dr on duty thought I'd damaged the outside of the eye. She arranged for me to see a specialist @4 pm half way across town. I tried suggesting that maybe I should head down town to the Emerg at the hospital where the DME is being treated but she saw no point
Saw the specialist who instantly said bad infection in the eye, and got in touch with the Opthalmology Resident at the hospital where the DME is being treated. Git on the subway to head downtown only to encounter shuttle buses due to construction!
Finally got down town, found the resident who in turn called the Ophthalmology Fellow.
After an ultrasound, examinations of the eye, an eye infection (endophthalmitis) was confirmed.
Various samples were taken from the eye, antibiotics injected into the eye, and three eye drops and an oral antibiotic prescribed, with a follow-up on Sunday.
Made it home Saturday, and then made it back downtown on Sunday.
Saw the same folks on the Sunday where it was confirmed that the bacteria in the samples was one that the drugs would handle.
Had another followup on Monday with more samples taken and another injection.
Right now waiting for an appointment on Wednesday.
Still can't see. I can see a shadowy movement if you wave a hand in front of the eye, and can see bright areas vs dim areas.
I'm told recovery can be several weeks and there is no certainty of the vision being as good as it was.
