Follow-up to this, again in case it helps anyone else. I have a new computer, and instead of copying my Calibre library across, I set up a new installation of Calibre and did a download and transfer of the same books that were giving me problems.
I then did a send to device and it worked perfectly. So I don't think there was a problem with my Oasis - I think there must have been some kind of glitch in my previous computer or something. Both MacBooks.
