If you change the look of the Edit Details window in the settings does the comments field show up?

Preferences > Look and Feel > Edit Metadata > "Edit metadata (single) layout" (it's at the top).

Also what is it currently set to? And if this doesn't work it might help people with better ideas than mine to know what version of Calibre and MacOS you are using.
