In practise it lets you have the lines closer together. There are some fonts which are naturally widely spaced and this 'patch' improves their appearance.

These are the my line 10 and 24 patches, they allow for smaller line spacing options. Handy for those of us who either prefer fonts which happen to have naturally wide line spacing, or who just like to cram as much text on the screen as possible.
