Do you run into it crashing at startup or it can't connect to the network? Winetricks and Play On Linux make it easy to install Kindle4PC 1.16 or 1.17 on Linux without crashing but at least on Ubuntu it can't connect to the network because of a missing ssl certificate. At least on Ubuntu 20.04 this fixed it for me:
