It is the beta. I have no epub books, but I did test with non-DRM mobi. It does work and looks nice. One funny thing is that I had to install the book to the SD card to get it to work. ePub works fine too. You can download ePub books from Gutenberg.org
They have many llustrated books in ePub format.
