It sounds like I need to deliberately change the font size even if I like what I get first time.
One thing to remember is the settings in the book's CSS are also in play. I recently purchased a 5 book series. 3 of the books had a font size defined for the body as 0.833333em while the other two had the body font size defined as 1em. The same 3 also used a line height that made the books look like my old high school double-spaced essays. I edited the books to correct what I saw as issues. Whether you would willing to do the same would depend on how comfortable you are digging into the internals of an epub.
