Amazon collects the state sales tax for the states which have it, and remits it to those states.

They don't "charge" sales tax.

Editing to add...I was glad when Amazon started collecting the sales tax. Before then, we were supposed to keep track of online purchases, and declare it on our Ohio return. That was a pain in the neck.
