If your Kobo runs the 4.30.188838 you don't need to put it on the reader.
May I propose the following:
Get the
Kobopatch_4.30.188838.zip file to your computer.
Unzip the content to a folder, let's call the folder Kobo430.
Kobo430 will have a subfolder src.
Copy the update file
kobo-update-4.30.18838.zip to Kobe430/src (see Post from Uncle Robin)
Don't unzip kobo-update-4.30.18838.zip
The batch file kobopatch.bat in Folder Kobo430 should be able to run now.
Run it and check that you have gotten
KoboRoot.tgz in the folder Kobo430/out
If that is the case then now do your patches, and rerun the batch-file.
If something is wrong now, then something is wrong with your edits.
