It allows ‘Hey Siri’ to work on older Macs and I think Center Stage as well (because A13 is present).
Presumably there is some flavor of iOS running on there. Will there be some way to install and run apps on it? What’s all that RAM for?
One might hope for an XDR version in the future.
I’m tempted. It would be nice to ‘double’ my iMac display with one that also would allow to select from its available reference modes (how are these different than iMac display Color Profiles?), with much better audio and camera.

One of the pre-event rumors was that a display with iOS would be released. Although that didn't officially happen, the Studio Display surely must have more going on under the hood than we can see at the moment. Maybe Apple will reveal some of that in a future FW update.
