When I 'Select with Membership', I am brought to a screen to purchase the item and 'Start Now' - presumably after paying $7.00.
Perhaps I have misunderstood something...I'm new to the 'Audible Game', and much prefer reading than listening. (However, I will sometimes listen to a book being read.)

Audible has two subscription models, Plus and Premium Plus. The $1.95 pricing is for Plus; the book you linked to is Premium Plus. The Plus catalog is
here, and you
can download the audiobooks to your device.
(ETA: when you search for books, look for the
INCLUDED tag.)
I find it weird you were billed right away; we got a free month trial first.
