You mentioned device still charges and that your computer still detects it. Either way, you most probably have to replace a part.
Getting a second hand newer model Kindle would probably be much cheaper than trying to fix that, to be honest.

Be careful of where you get a second hand Kindle. I've read of a number of people getting a Kindle from eBay only to find out it's been blacklisted. That means no registering it and no syncing from Amazon.
