I had a similar thing happen to my old Sony 505. It has a wall charger with a power block, but wouldn't charge. It also wouldn't charge from the usb (but they never did this very well). So I bought a secondhand charger for the unit from ebay. This worked. I hardly ever use this reader: no frontlight, but have to top up the charge now and then.
This is mainly why I suggested getting a new charger. It's much easier to replace than the battery. Worth a try.
