I just assumed that with a rapid re-connect, the import process still had a hold on the db when the filesystem unmounted and exported to USB. Perhaps the cover generation mentioned before -- though I doubt that's the instance for my case as I have Calibre upload the covers with the books.

I do find it amusingly ironic that the firmware that adds 'sideload mode' has a glitch that happens mostly when sideloading.
