While I do think Amazon could be trying to phase out downloading, I don't think the aeroplane mode users make up the majority of Kindle owners. I think they're just a fraction of the population. Small enough for Amazon to do away with downloads.
I also don't think Amazon will totally take out USB transfer/drag-and-drop function to Kindles. Even Apple isn't that dumb. They might just push Kindle for PC to users tho, just like iTunes.
But that's just me putting my conspiracy theory hat on.
Overall, this won't affect me because I have learned to never purchase anything from a closed off ecosystem. Amazon might not be there yet, but they're close enough. As amazing as Kindles are, they are sometimes a total nightmare to work with. The moment whispersync for documents is gone, I'm gone too.
