I think the oddness is because the desktop app is largely the code running on the devices. Or at least the book management and reading parts are. The devices do not have a clipboard, so it would be extra function to add. It seems a strange omission, but, it also suggests that so few people use the app for reading that it has never come up.
Personally, I never use the app for reading. Pretty much the only times I have opened a book in it is to test annotation syncing. There are much better methods of reading ebooks.
