Numbering series which includes omnibus editions?

I have some series which include omnibus editions. Usually if the entire series is in multiple omnibus editions, I just number the omnibus volumes sequentially (1, 2, 3...) even if it's actually 1-4, 5-7, 8-11. I'm not that keen on doing this as it makes it harder to find individual books in the series.

I am now trying to figure out what to do with a series where I have one omnibus edition in the middle, and individual books for the others: 1, 2, 3, 4-6, 7, 8. I thought of numbering them as:

a) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (but then 7 and 8 become 5 and 6)
b) 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 (but then it looks like 5 and 6 are missing)
c) 1, 2, 3, 4.56, 7, 8 (but what if later I have an omnibus of 4 books 4-7, or the numbers are 10,11,12, and the value gets rounded from 4.567 to 4.57, or from 10.1112 to 10.11?)

What do other people do to deal with this?
