Do you mean a "metadata plugboard"? That is the usual way to modify into in books when sending them to devices. For Kobo devices this is no needed for series info. Kobo has supported series info for a long time. It is shown as a separate link in the book details, can be used when sorting, is one of the items searched when searching for books, and there is a separate list to show the series. Unfortunately, this isn't read from the book. Calibre can set the series info when the device is connected.
