Take a look at the thread about it, to find out if your specific problem is encountered by anyone else. In the thread, you'll find how to roll back to the version before (4.30.xxxx), too. It is very easy to roll back. Only thing to be mindful of is to keep the wifi turned off or the reader starts synching back to the latest version.
I had a lot of problems while on 4.31. and the rollback solved all of them for me.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to do as you said and see how it goes.
However I discovered another strange thing, if I remove one of the problematic books from the kobo and then put it back everything is fine until ... I mark it as completed, then it starts crashing again.
This leads me to think that the book is not the problem but rather something related to the kobo operating system... perhaps a poorly developed update?
