I had to follow up with what I finally figured out. I started adding books to the freshly nuked Kindle. When I got to about 4,000 books, I noticed that it was really bogging down checking the Kindle for books, and when I got to 5,000 it crashed, then the Kindle on restart would show the generic covers that could not be fixed. I glanced over at the app and noticed it was 32-Bit, which was the version I downloaded. I searched for and found the 64-bit-only version of calibre, removed ALL the books again (would not complete discovery, of course, so there was no choice), and it zipped right through installing the books with covers, no re-connect required. I can only suppose all this was caused by the 4GB RAM limitation on the 32-bit app?
I am celebrating by have some Glenlivet 18 year old on the rocks.
Perhaps this will help others with similar issues with larger archives.
