Ah, but French replaced Latin as a universal language and all of the Noble Russians did speak it. Then later English replaced French.
I find the French-English on my Kobo a big help with the 18th & 19th British writers. I've not attempted War and Peace yet, but some older PD translation of it is in my Calibre library from Project Gutenberg. Along with other big old ones like Clarissa.
