Did you try the calibre metadata search? I had the same issues with the filemanager, but when the metadata search came to the search menu, it solved most of the problems. You can search your library and look at the list without leaving the book, if you select one it gets loaded, but if you cancel it does not reload the book. Works for me.

. Also you can long press one of the search result to show a popup with the document metadata (cover, author, tags, series...) without opening the book.
