I opened up the device to see inside and figure out exactly what the problem is. Using my hearing and the lay-out of the circuit, it's highly probable that part LA3 is the culprit at hand, supporting the theory that the noise is, in fact, coil whine. However, this cannot be fixed by a user, as applying any kind of pressure does not lessen the noise. If this happens to anyone else in the future, and the noise is too loud and therefore too disrupting whilst reading, I do indeed recommend returning it (instead of fruitlessly voiding the warranty).

The e-reader was not connected to a power supply, and the front light was not on. The battery was at 90%. The problem does not seem to depend on the book.
