I then added a "Singles" collection which is all the books not in a series, so I can browse by Series, or by Singles. Dramatically reduces the required scrolling to pick a book to read.

After 10+ years of Kindle use, I have now realised how restrictive the Kindle is.
Mine's the opposite. I went from Kobo to Kindle (when my kobo broke, the official and only retailer in my country isn't affiliated with Kobo anymore) so I'm experiencing how limiting it is to handle collections on a Kindle. Thankfully my collections aren't that extensive, and I only use them for book series and certain authors.

Going back to the OP's question. I use Calibre's plugboard too to automatically put the series name and number on the title so they're all in order.
