Others have mentioned hearing an electronic whine in the past. And did have it from one of my Kobos. But, I had to hold it close to my ear. I can't remember which it was, and none are speaking to me now. It might have gone away, or my hearing is.
Do you have it in a case? There is a good chance that would block the sound.
In any case, if it is as loud as you say, and it bugs you, take it back and exchange it. Hopefully another one won't be as loud.
