Your starting point seems to be that nonfiction and/or longer books are less gripping. If that's true for you, fine. It isn't a moral failing.

If I don't like a book, long or short, I stop reading it.

So, I'd say, start lots of books. I use libraries, but Amazon free first chapter samples are an alternative.
