I’ve started The Private World of Ottoman Women by Godfrey Goodwin and am hoping it gets better, as right now it’s not particularly insightful or nuanced. But there’s a chance it will improve once he gets to personalities and stops making jejune generalizations.
OTOH, I’m on the verge of abandoning Death of a River Guide by Richard Flanagan. Other than the stuntishness of the central conceit (life passing before the eyes of a drowning person) this is really just a sweeping family saga. I hate sweeping family sagas. I’ll give it one more shot; according to my Kobo I’m 25% into it.
