Hmmm... If you are converting the files, the DRM has to be be removed first.

As for unique metadata, it depends on what metadata you are looking at? Mobi doesn't support embedded metadata though calibre will insert a metadata jacket (page), ePub is likely the best format, PDF is an iffy format. Assuming you have KF8/azw3 ebooks, you can embed some metadata but Amazon doesn't seem to do much embedding of metadata as most I have imported into calibre seem to have a rather poor selection of metadata.

Personally, I would go for the download to your computer, import into calibre where you can edit metadata, covers, etc. and then send to your Kindle.
