Firstly, the filename is not important. The device reads the metadata from the book and uses that. The filename is only used if the book format does not have any metadata. And in that case, the filename is used as the title, and the author is "Unknown Author" (or something like that).

As @Semwize said, it is sorting on lastname and the title. I have never noticed that and assume it would sort using "lastname, firstname" and then title. And as @Semwize said, I don't think there is a good way to fix this. People who want the sorting to use "firstname lastname" will replace the space with a non-breaking space or maybe an underscore. Or, if they want to use "lastname, firstname" they replace the comma and space with something else that looks the same, but, is not treated the same.

Personally, I consider this to be a bug. The author sort should keep the books by the same author together. I recommend reporting it to Kobo so that they can fix it. I'm wondering if it is a bug that has crept in recently as I don't remember it being mentioned before. And it feels like something I would have seen.
