Considering all Kobo does is to take the uploaded epub and run it through their own routines that are similar to what the KoboTouchExtended driver does, the difference is pretty meaningless. Yes, epub is probably the best format for archiving purposes. But, a kepub meets all the standards for epub, so it is also an epub.
The real differences in epubs and kepubs is the
renderer. Which for archive purposes, is unimportant. And the fact that no two epub renderers agree on how to do it, means it is even more unimportant.
