I've never gone that route but apparently you can use the Kindle for PC's serial number or whatever for the key in the DeDRM plugin. Once you get that plugin set up all you do is drag the book into calibre and like magic the DRM is gone. Then you can convert it to EPUB.

Luckily I'm not a former Kindle user, so I don't have anything directly purchased from Amazon. Barnes & Noble might be a different matter, though, but I've only bought maybe a couple ebooks from them ever. No major loss.
