It's worse than that. What is considered to be "football" depends on the state you live in. In NSW, it is Rugby League and Victoria it is Aussie rules. The other states fall one way or the other. The "real" Football association (the one with the round ball that is actually kicked and not carried like all the other footballs) has been trying to claim the name back and stop the use of "soccer", but, all it is doing is adding confusion.

From memory, Aussie rules claim to have the first codified set of rules. But, I don't know if handing back eyes is part of the rules. I've never followed it and don't understand the game at all as I grew up in NSW and hence football is Rugby League, but, my sons played round-ball Football and followed that, so I'm just confused.
