This was before the miniseries adaptation or the internet. The Stand was just another Stephen King book, one that didn't (yet) have a movie. I thought it was going to be a horror story, like Christine or The Shining. Honestly, for a while there I was just annoyed with the book.
That cover though, I still really like it.

That's the original one I read (and still have). Then I read the uncut version that came out with the two people with scythes attacking each other on the cover.
