I'm quoting this in full because it seems like the optimal response: First, WHY, seriously WHY convert from PDF at all? Is there a compelling need or reason to do so? The nature of your book seems ideally suited to PDF.

The other suggestion, a collection of Hi-res images, would definitely seem to be the next best option, imo.
