I found the mobi file type option in the docs and tried using --mobi-file-type 'new'. The images were not skewed in the Calibre viewer as they were before but I can't open these types of files on my older Kindle.

Doing some quick googling I see that Amazon has a Kindle Package Format. Is that the "Amazon tools" you're talking about? Do you think it would make a difference if I were to compress the images with a tool like TinyPNG before compiling the ebook with Calibre?
