Unfortunately I don't have a Mac (so don't know anything specifically about that platform), but with Linux it's just a matter of installing and running Calibre and plugging in a USB cable. From there you just "Send to Device."

I've also had issues with books taking forever to load on the PocketBook Cloud. Once they're there, they sync quickly to your PocketBook, but getting them there is the issue (as you've seen). If you're buying ePubs (or borrowing them from Overdrive) you can send the .ASCM file directly to the PocketBook via "Send-to-PocketBook." From there the PocketBook will download the book from the Adobe Server (or wherever they come from). I'm guessing DropBox would work fairly well, though I haven't tried it yet.
