Authors (timeline) order, not as published (although SOME do align).
Some are 'deleted scenes', originally removed to fit publishers specs.
Some seem to be the backstory for a character that grabbed fans attention.

Take the Pern books. there are 'Cycles' within the Universe,some are written interleaved with others. Then there was the short 'weyr search' and another (can't remember the name
) which was almost the same story, just from the other POV
