Personally I'm not terribly fussy and can make do with uneven light/less than stellar contrast. I still do notice the differences, though.

Personally I think that, in the daytime, the best thing to do is adjust the backlight for clearest display. This usually means just on enough so that the background looks paper white and contrast is best. If I go out in the sun I turn it down a bit, even off when in full sun, indoors in low light, I run the backlight somewhere in the middle - often in the 50% to 70% range.
