As the dominant e-book seller Amazon has more to lose than to gain by allowing their books to be read outside of their ecosystem. They want to make doing that inconvenient, however it isn't worth the cost and effort to make it impossible.

It takes a bit of effort to block Kindle for PC from updating, but you can certainly do so by following the instructions in the first post in this thread. If you want to continue to purchase e-books from Amazon you can still do so. If you decide to go elsewhere I doubt that Amazon will not be bothered by that.
