Because at this point, Kobo do not officially support sideloaded audiobooks. They only support audiobooks purchased from them. Hopefully that will change. If it does, the player will be cleaned up.

My understanding is that the player for MP3Z files was something for the developers to experiment with. It might have been used for proof-of-concept and to demonstrate the hardware could handle playback. But, as it wasn't a supported format, it hasn't been made pretty. Hopefully that will changed. And I encourage anyone who wants to listen to sideloaded books on the devices to tell Kobo.
