Cry to Heaven. That was a historical novel (set in Italy) about the castrati. I thought it was originally published under the Anne Rampling name, but Wikipedia tells me it was published as an Anne Rice book instead.
Anyway...
Cry to Heaven was certainly a revelation to my teenage self...
