I haven't tried out the shelves feature yet. Still, my first impression is that the Nook software is a bit better overall than before. For one thing, it's less buggy. The GL4 isn't waterproof and the light doesn't get orange-y enough for what you'd like, but like you, I like the look and feel of the Nook, both hardware and software. I'll play around more with it and let you know.
