8£ is about $10.65. So you are correct $7.25 is less then the equivalent of $10.65. Seems like a rather silly thing for you to say, I think most people would figure out that $7.25 is less then $10.65.
A much more accurate statement for you to say would be:
The US federal minimum wage is $7.25, which is about 5.25£.

You are correct, I did miss the "effective" part.
I would be interested in what the UK "effective minimum wage" is, as I don't believe we have seen that posted yet.
