I thought the US was close to the UK, but doing a google, it appears the US federal minimum wage is $7.25 (5.25£).

As far as "average" minimum wage (at least currently), your number seems a little high. Many states seems to be at $7.25.

I was surprised by the U.S. numbers. My state's is $13 and going to $15.
