I borrowed a book that is 38 MB - it has many images inside. It just crashes my kobo when I try to load it. Then kobo reboots.

Welcome to mobileread
Have you viewed ebooks with pictures on your device previously? In my opinion ereaders don't render pictures well, they are often grainy or hard to clearly see and don't look anywhere near as good as they should or you'd want them to. And, of course, on the ereader they're not in colour.
Instead I'd recommend only viewing ebooks that have a lot of photos, or maps, or diagrams etc on a pc or tablet device, using an app like moonreader or app of choice. That sort of device should render those sort of images well, allowing for best visual representation, and in colour.
You haven't said what format the ebook you want to borrow is published in, and as it's borrowed I'm guessing there's only one format on offer. That said, viewing it on a pc or tablet 38mb won't be a problem.
EDIT
Ah, just remembered that as a borrowed ebook you'd need to either read the book using ADE or another app that renders borrowed ebooks. I think kobo might have a tablet app, not sure
(Yes, i checked, kobo does have an app you can use on a tablet, which means you can borrow using your tablet rather than your ereader)
